Do I need a referral?
A referral is not necessary to see Dr Stay. However according to Medicare guidelines, if you see Dr Stay without a referral from your General Practitioner (GP), you will be ineligible to access subsidised imaging such as MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scans.

Does a referral from my Physiotherapist help?
A referral from your Physiotherapist is wonderful. It will help Dr Stay establishing the treatment already provided and assist with liaison with your Physiotherapist to plan ongoing rehabilitation and exercises. To access subsidised medical imaging (as above), a referral from your General Practitioner is required.

What is a Sport and Exercise Medicine Physician?
A Sport and Exercise Medicine Physician (SEM Physician or Sports Physician) is a Medical Specialist who is a Fellow of the Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Physicians (ACSEP). Sports Physicians have completed their medical training at university, their medical residency in the public health system and then trained as a Specialist in Sport and Exercise Medicine. During this training, they are exposed to a wide variety of sports and sport-related medical and musculoskeletal problems. They are recognised Medical Specialists by both Medicare and AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency).

Do you have to be an athlete or a sportsperson to see a Sports Physician?
No! Sports Physicians work with elite athletes, but they also work with non-athletes - folks who do real, everyday jobs and occasionally find time for exercise.
If you’re not very active, or if you are carrying an injury, Sharon can work with you to develop a plan to increase the amount of activity you do on a daily basis, taking into account injury and illness limitations.
